Alister MacKenzie's beautiful Sharp Park Golf Course, the 77-year-old municipal course owned by San Franciso, but located in its southern suburb of Pacifica in San Mateo County, is endangered. MacKenzie is the most famous, and many would say greatest, golf course architect in history. And the Sharp Park course is one of his very few public courses. It is also one of only three public seaside links courses in California. (The others are Pacific Grove Municipal and the resort course Spanish Bay, both located in Pebble Beach.)
San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, under political pressure from environmental and anti-golf activists, in April directed the Recreation and Park Department to develop alternative plans to keep operating the course, or to close it, or reduce the course to 9 holes, and return to the Supervisors with recommended action plans by mid-August. The Washington D.C.-based Cultural Landscape Foundation has placed Sharp Park on its watch list of the country's most significant endangered public landscapes, and City of Pacifica Mayor, Julie Lancelle, has joined the fight on the side of the golfers.
San Francisco Public Golf Alliance and the Sharp Park Golf Club are leading the fight to save the course. For more information, and to volunteer time and money to this worthy cause, see the following links. San Francisco Public Golf Alliance can be contacted at: info@sfpublicgolf.com
