Are you familiar with how your index comes to be? Many think that it is based on the average of the 10 lowest scores of your last 20 games. However, to put a fine point on it, it is actually based on the 10 lowest differentials of your last 20 games. What’s a differential? A differential is a more accurate reflection of your golfing ability. It takes into consideration the difficulty of the course using the Course Rating (CR) and Slope. Mathematically, here is the formula:
Score - CR (of the course played) x 113(standard Slope) / Slope (of the course played)
So the Course Rating and Slope can have a dramatic effect on the differential; the same score played at different courses will, most likely, produce different differentials. Example: a score of 85 played at Dungeness (CR70.2/S119) produces a differential of 14.1; a score of 85 at Santa Rosa GCC (CR72.8/S124) produces a differential of 11.1.
Then, once the differentials of 20 most recent games have been calculated, the computer will average the ten lowest differentials and multiply the result by .96. This factor of .96 is called a “Bonus for Excellence” and is an incentive for players to improve their golf games that is built into the USGA Handicap System. The resulting number will be your Handicap Index for the month (all digits beyond the tenths are dropped, not rounded).

July marks the mid point in my term as your President. Two major tournaments are behind us – the Senior/Super Senior held in Alameda with 180 entrants, and the Spring Partners held in Lincoln with 288 contestants. Both of these tournaments saw many first time tournament players and several new champions crowned. Our new Tournament Director, Donna Weigelt, has promised to have the Tournament boards with tee and flight assignments posted in the Motels and Pro Shop by three PM the day before the beginning of the PWGA Championship and Helen Lengfeld Tournaments. This procedure was not followed for the Seniors and Partners Tournaments and resulted in confusion when contestants arrived at the course and did not know where they were to go! Thankfully PWGA members are resourceful folks, and everyone managed to get off on time with their clubs in their cart! Fortunately, everyone was playing at the same facility and we did not have to drive to different places!
Vice President Dianne Davis and I have visited three Areas in the month of June; Fresno, San Jose, and Redwood. We had the pleasure of playing with area members at their playdays at Sierra Meadows, Palo Alto, and Rooster Run. Our eight areas are quite different, and their playdays reflect the needs and wants of the clubs in each area. Some run team play at the same time they are doing stroke play and scoring for medallion points. Others have strictly “playdays” where they compete in composite 4somes for golf balls only. Attendance will range from 15 to 100+. North Central can’t play until the snow is gone in May, and Fresno doesn’t play in July and August because of the valley heat. But with all the differences we all have one thing that unites us - a love of the “game” of golf. Come and join your friends at one of our remaining Major Tournaments: July 19-21 Mixed Couples; August 11&12 Championship; September 8&9 Team Play Championships; October 6&7 Founders Tournament the Helen Lengfeld. If you can’t attend a major, at least try to attend one of your local area playdays listed on page 71 in your 2009 Handbook. I hope to see you on the course!
